1, Wiki explains the concept of local are network (LAN), which is commonly used in home, office and some group of buildings. LAN was created by university network.
This article is concise and easy to understand.
2, Wiki: computer network
This is a good reading. It is very comprehensive.
Network classification: connection method, scale, network architecture and network topology.
Types of network: LAN, PAN, CAN, WAN,MAN,GAN, VPN ...
Hardware components: network interface cards, repeaters, hubs, bridges, switches and hubs
I have a question:
I found that we have many readings in Wikipedia. We also know that wikipedia allows anybody to publish and edit the concepts. In other words, the editors in wikipedia can be anybody. Is the knowledge on wiki true and authoritative? Why we rely on wiki to learn knowledge?
3, The video on youtube talks about the common types of computer net works. There are personal networks, Local networks and world wide networks. Though the man do not mention the many details about three types of networks. But I do like this video when I am tired of reading numerous papers. This is a interesting way for us to get knowledge.

Management of FRID in libraries
The technology of FRID is more advanced than Barcodes. The author analyzes the pros and cons of FRID in libraries. In my opinion, it may be a little harder for libraries who lack financial aid to realize the total change into FRID, sine using FRID in libraries will take libraries a lot of money. And FRID is not perfect.

2, why the information on PPT page 53 and page 54 about NTSC is different? PPT 53, " 60 "interlaced" half-frames/sec, 512x486", but page 54, "640x480 and 30 frames per second". The number of frames per second is different.
3, what about the video format extension". rmvb". It is a very popular video formats when we download videos from internet.

1, wiki compression
Wiki make a comparison between lossless compression and lossy compression. In lossless compression, we do not lose data after compressing and the result is exactly identical to the original ones. But in lossy compression, we lose data in the process of compression. The author takes some examples to illustrate his point.
In digital libraries, it is important to figure out the methods of data compression in digital transfer and digital preservation. The preservation of master copies is vital to human heritage but this would take huge space to store them. We need to choose appropriate methods to preserve different materials.
2, Data compression basics
The author mainly talks about the lossless data compression methods including run-length encoding, the Lempel- Ziv compressor family, entropy coding and prediction and error coding. Then the author make comparisons among RLE, LZ and prediction.
Speaking about compressing English characters, how about another languages like Chinese characters? Do they use the same theory? But I cannot think out the way of compressing Chinese characters. Is there a ratio compression difference among difference language characters?

The author talks about several challenges facing them. This is the common problems when two or more different corporations try to cooperate with each other, especially in various fields. I am interested in the metadata challenge. Now we have followed up many new metadatat standards such as Dublin Core, which is easier to handle that MARC. But according to this characteristic, two people may create two records except the required part of Dubline Core. How to deal with this problem? More and more metadata standards are created now, but we do not have a common standard like MARC in the past. How to realize the interoperability among these standards?

This is an interesting article. I partly agree with the author’s viewpoints. Libraries can use youtube to help develop their services and meet the needs of patrons. Libraries should catch up with the current fashion.
I logged on the homepage of computer history museum. (http://www.computerhistory.org/) They use youtube to collect and display their speeches and presentations. This is new and interesting. Libraries now are lack of videos to publicize themselves. Youtube is a good platform for libraries to put their services to more internet patrons.

2,where do MARC records preserve in libraries? in a database connected with the whole library system? Dose OPAC construct with these MARC records? How can computers read MARC since computers can only understand 0 and 1 but MARC are constructed with words, characters and sentences?
3, Metadata create manually or automatically? in what condition can metadata invent by computers?
4,Since there is no unified metadata schema,how we realize interoperability in Dublin Core, MARC and MODS?

Reading notes: Week4
This article is comprehensive and covers many aspects of database. There are many professional term in this article. It is a little hard for me to read, since I have no computer science background.
2, Anne J. Gilliland. Introduction to Metadata, pathways to Digital Information: 1: Setting the Stage
we have talked much about metadata. In Table 1, I found that the set of MARC is data structure standard and AACR is data content standard. What is the difference between MARC and AACR? MARC is machine-readable language. But librarians still have to input data to the system.
What is the difference between data and metadata?
3, Eric J. Miller. An Overview of the Dublin Core Data Model
The objective of Dublin Core is to define a simple set of data elements so that authors and publishers of Internet documents could create their own metadata records with no extensive training. Do human beings write Dublin core or computers write them? I opened the homepage of Dublin Core, subject descriptions are written by XML. It is important to learn XML for librarians, we have to not only figure out the traditional and machiedable catalogues, but also grasp some computer languages. It is interesting to learn Dublin Core.
