3) MICHAEL K. BERGMAN, “The Deep Web: Surfacing Hidden Value” http://www.press.umich.edu/jep/07-01/bergman.html

1, Web Search Engines: Part1

This essay talks several aspects and changes in the web search engines such as the crawling problem and spam problem. I found this is really interesting. Web engines have to perfectly deal with these problems to meet patron's needs.

2, Web Search Engines: Part 2

Part 2 reviews the algorithms and data structures required to index 400 terabytes of web pages and deliver high-quality results in response to hundreds of millions of queries each day.
This article is a little harder for me, as I am not familiar with the terminology of information retrieval.

3, Current developments and future trends for the OAI protocol for metadata harvesting

The mission of the Open Archives Initiative, the entity responsible for the protocol, is to " develop and promote interoperability standards that aim to facilitate the efficient dissemination of the content". The protocol is based on common standards like XML. HTTP and Dubline Core.

4, The Deep Web: surfacing hidden value

This article contains several characteristics of deep web and compare the surface web against the deep web.
Directed query technology is the only mean to integrate deep and surface Web information. I am interested in exploring the content of deep web pages, what is the current achievements? How to realized the goal? This is still a problem.

LIS 2600 Unit 10 XML muddiest point

It seems that XML schema is more powerful than XML DTD. SO why we learn DTD. Is there a case that DTD is more useful than XML schema? Can you give some comparisons between DTD and XML schema?

1, Digital libraries: challenges and influential work
Huge difference exists between providing access to discrete sets of digital collections and providing digital library services. To address this problem. information providers have to design enhanced gateway and navigation services on the interface and also introduce federation mechanisms to assist users to retrieval information through the distributed and heterogeneous information environment. However, the seamless federation access to information is still a big issues in digital library services.
The author introduce the OAI, however, OAI does not work in some environment. OAI is not a perfect one for harvesting information. In the future years, current standards have to be extended to offer more effective and efficient access to the distributed information environment.

2, Dewey Meets Turing
Librarians, computer scientists, and the Digital Library Initiative
This paper focuses on the relationship between librarians and computer scientists. I do feel the same way with the author. Different occupations have different opinions on digital library, sometimes it is difficult to negotiate among these opinions.

3. Institutional repositories: essential infrastructure for scholarship in the digital age
The author described the current developments in institutional repositories and tried to explain why these are so deeply and strategically important to the enterprises of scholarship and higher education. Institutional repositories is a powerful idea.

4,Beyond HTML
Developing and re-imagining library web guides in a content management system
This paper talks about the content management system that designed to manage the 30 web-based research at Georgia State University library.
The article is published in 2005, I am not sure that whether the libraries still use content management. And what is the meaning of utilizing content management in libraries?

LIS 2600 Unit7 Internet and WWW Technologies reading notes

1, How Internet Infrastructure work
The content is similar with what we have learned in the class.
URL, domain name, web servers, the topology of internet work.

2, According to the article, library vendors have two choices. They can continue to maintain large systems that use proprietary methods of interoperability and promise tight integration of services for their customers.
I think this approach is difficult to realize for some too old system, especially in developing countries.
My undergraduate university used to operate a small library system which is designed by China in 1970s. However, with the development of library holdings, catalog records and electronic database. The original library system is not applied to the current the conditions any more no matter how hard that the library vendor work on. The university library decided to change its library system.
However, changing a library system is so complicated, tremendous data have to transfer to another new library system, which is a pains-taking job. Besides, new models is strange for librarians and patrons. The effects of the new library system have to be evaluated carefully.

3,Talks Sergey Brin and Larry Page on Google
The global map of Google is amazing.
I am interested in listening to what they say! It is useful and indeed relaxing!

LIS 2600 Week 6 reading notes

1) Local Area Network: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_Area_Network
2) Computer network http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_network
3) Common types of computer networks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dpgqDdfUjQ
4) Coyle, K. (2005). Management of RFID in libraries. Journal of Academic Librarianship, 31(5), 486-489.

1, Wiki explains the concept of local are network (LAN), which is commonly used in home, office and some group of buildings. LAN was created by university network.
This article is concise and easy to understand.

2, Wiki: computer network
This is a good reading. It is very comprehensive.
Network classification: connection method, scale, network architecture and network topology.
Types of network: LAN, PAN, CAN, WAN,MAN,GAN, VPN ...
Hardware components: network interface cards, repeaters, hubs, bridges, switches and hubs

I have a question:
I found that we have many readings in Wikipedia. We also know that wikipedia allows anybody to publish and edit the concepts. In other words, the editors in wikipedia can be anybody. Is the knowledge on wiki true and authoritative? Why we rely on wiki to learn knowledge?

3, The video on youtube talks about the common types of computer net works. There are personal networks, Local networks and world wide networks. Though the man do not mention the many details about three types of networks. But I do like this video when I am tired of reading numerous papers. This is a interesting way for us to get knowledge.

Management of FRID in libraries
The technology of FRID is more advanced than Barcodes. The author analyzes the pros and cons of FRID in libraries. In my opinion, it may be a little harder for libraries who lack financial aid to realize the total change into FRID, sine using FRID in libraries will take libraries a lot of money. And FRID is not perfect.

LIS 2600 Week 5 the muddist point

1, why TIFF is better than PNG in black and white images, especially text and drawing? Is it GIF good at text and drawings? And in the class, we are told that PNG only use one compression, so what compression does PNG use?

2, why the information on PPT page 53 and page 54 about NTSC is different? PPT 53, " 60 "interlaced" half-frames/sec, 512x486", but page 54, "640x480 and 30 frames per second". The number of frames per second is different.

3, what about the video format extension". rmvb". It is a very popular video formats when we download videos from internet.

week5 LIS 2600 reading notes

1, wiki compression

Wiki make a comparison between lossless compression and lossy compression. In lossless compression, we do not lose data after compressing and the result is exactly identical to the original ones. But in lossy compression, we lose data in the process of compression. The author takes some examples to illustrate his point.

In digital libraries, it is important to figure out the methods of data compression in digital transfer and digital preservation. The preservation of master copies is vital to human heritage but this would take huge space to store them. We need to choose appropriate methods to preserve different materials.

2, Data compression basics

The author mainly talks about the lossless data compression methods including run-length encoding, the Lempel- Ziv compressor family, entropy coding and prediction and error coding. Then the author make comparisons among RLE, LZ and prediction.

Speaking about compressing English characters, how about another languages like Chinese characters? Do they use the same theory? But I cannot think out the way of compressing Chinese characters. Is there a ratio compression difference among difference language characters?

3, Edward A. Galloway, “Imaging Pittsburgh: Creating a shared gateway to digital image collections of the Pittsburgh region” First Monday 9:5 2004

This paper summarizes remarks made at Web–Wise 2004 Conference in Chicago.

http://firstmonday.org/htbin/cgiwrap/bin/ojs/index.php/fm/article/view/1141/1061

This is the right URL to the article.

The author talks about several challenges facing them. This is the common problems when two or more different corporations try to cooperate with each other, especially in various fields. I am interested in the metadata challenge. Now we have followed up many new metadatat standards such as Dublin Core, which is easier to handle that MARC. But according to this characteristic, two people may create two records except the required part of Dubline Core. How to deal with this problem? More and more metadata standards are created now, but we do not have a common standard like MARC in the past. How to realize the interoperability among these standards?

4, Paula L. Webb, YouTube and libraries: It could be a beautiful relationship C&RL News, June 2007 Vol. 68, No. 6 0

Available Link:

http://www.lita.org/ala/mgrps/divs/acrl/publications/crlnews/2007/jun/youtube.cfm

The URL that the instructor gave us is a dead link.

This is an interesting article. I partly agree with the author’s viewpoints. Libraries can use youtube to help develop their services and meet the needs of patrons. Libraries should catch up with the current fashion.

I logged on the homepage of computer history museum. (http://www.computerhistory.org/) They use youtube to collect and display their speeches and presentations. This is new and interesting. Libraries now are lack of videos to publicize themselves. Youtube is a good platform for libraries to put their services to more internet patrons.

week4 LIS 2600 muddist point

1, what is the relationship between database and database management system? Is Access a database or a database management system?

2,where do MARC records preserve in libraries? in a database connected with the whole library system? Dose OPAC construct with these MARC records? How can computers read MARC since computers can only understand 0 and 1 but MARC are constructed with words, characters and sentences?

3, Metadata create manually or automatically? in what condition can metadata invent by computers?

4,Since there is no unified metadata schema, how we realize interoperability in Dublin Core, MARC and MODS?

Reading notes: Week4

1, Database
This article is comprehensive and covers many aspects of database. There are many professional term in this article. It is a little hard for me to read, since I have no computer science background.

2, Anne J. Gilliland. Introduction to Metadata, pathways to Digital Information: 1: Setting the Stage
we have talked much about metadata. In Table 1, I found that the set of MARC is data structure standard and AACR is data content standard. What is the difference between MARC and AACR? MARC is machine-readable language. But librarians still have to input data to the system.
What is the difference between data and metadata?

3, Eric J. Miller. An Overview of the Dublin Core Data Model
The objective of Dublin Core is to define a simple set of data elements so that authors and publishers of Internet documents could create their own metadata records with no extensive training. Do human beings write Dublin core or computers write them? I opened the homepage of Dublin Core, subject descriptions are written by XML. It is important to learn XML for librarians, we have to not only figure out the traditional and machiedable catalogues, but also grasp some computer languages. It is interesting to learn Dublin Core.

the muddist point in Week3

1, what are the differences between "Open Source Software" and "public domain software"? They are both free to modify, copy and redistribute. I can not find any difference.

2, I am confused about BIOS. Dose BIOS exist before we install operating system? Where does BIOS come? It also has interface. What is the relations between BIOS and operating system? Why computers need BIOS?

3, Does the existing virus have some relations with open source? Is it because the code is open? Generally speaking, free software and open software are less safe than software that charges fees.

4, Something strange. I have to pay fees to get Adobe Reader software in U.S.A, but I can download free Adobe Reader software from Chinese website. Why? Dose this free software have copyright? Is it legal?

reading notes week3

1) Machtelt Garrels. “Introduction to Linux: A Hands on Guide”
(only need to read section 1, but you are welcome to read the whole document)
http://tldp.org/LDP/intro-linux/html/

To tell the truth, I do not touch Linux before, reading chapter 1 helps me get the whole overview of this operationg system. I think I need practical trainning to look what the real linux is through my eyes.

2. Max Os X
I have never deal with a Mac OS X machine before, it is the first time that I use Mac machines in Hillman library. It sounds great. However, frankly speaking, I am not accustomed to this operation system. Mac OS X and windows has many differences. Except the theory of system, interfaces are different. Perhaps, it is the reason of custom. Mac indeed have merits, the interfaces are beautiful and concise. To write more comments, I need more learning about the structure of Max and more practical training it.

3) Paul Thurott “An Update on the Windows Roadmap”

This maybe the most familiar part to me, since I only use windows operating system in China. And windows is more pupolar in my coutry since many software only run in windows. Now my laptop runs Windows Vista home basic, I do not feel any difference compared with Windows XP except many authoried windows asking me whether to run or not. I am looking forward to Windows 7.

the muddist point in PPT(LIS 2600 week2-computer hardware)

PPT page 10 displays the class goal that" Differentiate between storage devices and storage media". However, after class I still can not differentiate them. I think they refer to the same things at some degree. In the class, the instructor did not mention them according to my memory. What is the difference between "devices" and "media"? I am a little confused.

Reading notes: Discovering computers Chapter1

This book is useful for computers beginners. Because it has lots of tables, illustrations and every chapter includes a summary. The first chapter talks about five main components of a computer, that is input devices, output devices, a system unit, storage media and communication devices. And the book also contains social issues about computers like the history of computers and impact on people's life. I feel that the content of this book is complementary to what we learned in class.

reading notes on Unit 2: Computer Hardware (9/8)

Required Readings:

I got to know multiple physical components of computer software and wiki give us concise definitions of each typical pc hardware. Frankly speaking, I am a little surprised that we use Wiki to read about the basic computer knowledge as a future librarian. However, wiki is indeed a powerful tool for definitions, though I believe we could find many materials better than wiki's definitions.

Moore's Law says that" transistor density in integrated circuits doubles about every two years". Wiki talks many aspects about this law, I am a little confused about other formulations and similar laws, especially per unit cost, why some cost increase and some decrease? In a word. the explanation of Moore's law on wiki is very comprehensive. To know every details about the law, I need to go over it several times.

I feel that the website of ”Computer History Museum" is a precious resource for us to learn every aspects of computer. And Moore's law is also embraced by the website. The picture about changing transistors on microprocessor is a good example to demonstrate the law. This is great to me to understand the law. I saw some videos on youtube played by computer history museum, which is wonderful for us the learn the history of computers. And I will often log on the website from now on.

reading notes on LIS 2600 week1

1, Title: OCLC report: Information Format Trends: Content, Not Containers (2004).
Notes: After reading the essay, I still can not differentiate the content and container in information. I think blogs and new media are containers of information. What do "micro content" and "multimedia content" mean? The adjective before content is still talking about new containers. As far as I am concerned, people and librarians pay more attention to containers, specially the newly form, such as blogs, emails, wiki. On one hand, patrons are more interested in new skills. On the other hand, librarians focus more on display organized information through various technology forms these years. I think the whole librarianship are emphasizing information containers now. How dose content work out? I am a litter confusing.

2) Clifford Lynch, “Information Literacy and Information Technology Literacy: New Components in the Curriculum for a Digital Culture”
Notes: The definition of information technology literacy is new to me. I heard more about information literacy in the past. This essay is usefull. I knew the brief meanings about these two definitions and their differences. We need to be skilled in both sides as a professional librarian.

3) Vaughan, J. (2005). Lied Library @ four years: technology never stands still.
Notes: This essay is good example for me to get the whole knowledge of changing technology in academic libraries. The author explains every aspects in details and analyzes their methods of solving various problems. I am a bit confused about the phrase of "feeding the beast". I do not know the meanings that the author use this words here. And I saw this phrase in "Double Fold" ,too.

the muddist point in PPT(LIS 2600 week1-introduction)

1, We are told that be "true" is some common characters of information. How to define the meaning of "true"? what dose "false information" mean? For example, the gas price is the last past three months were 2.95$...(the fact), if I said the wrong account, then my words include false information. Can we define what I said is not information? However, in my opinion, though my words are not the fact, they are also information.

2, Page 31 in PPT. "IT provides materials, user groups, author groups". Dose that mean the computer users or online users?

3, Page 32 in PPT. "some view IT as a threat to library recently, since less funding are available to libraries now" why less funding because of IT? Is it because more users are likely to use Internet? What about the funding before IT?

new start

This is my first time to open a blog.
I hope that it will work well and welcome to all!

I have to apologize that I have a big problem in writing and reading essays in English. So it may be hard for you to understand my notes. I am really sorry. Now I am working hard on it. I sincerely hope that I can make you understand me several weeks later. I also hope that I can write critical and worth reading notes like you.

I will learn from all of you.

Please help me. when I ask questions. Thank you very much.
