This essay talks several aspects and changes in the web search engines such as the crawling problem and spam problem. I found this is really interesting. Web engines have to perfectly deal with these problems to meet patron's needs.


2, Web Search Engines: Part 2

Part 2 reviews the algorithms and data structures required to index 400 terabytes of web pages and deliver high-quality results in response to hundreds of millions of queries each day.
This article is a little harder for me, as I am not familiar with the terminology of information retrieval.

3, Current developments and future trends for the OAI protocol for metadata harvesting

The mission of the Open Archives Initiative, the entity responsible for the protocol, is to " develop and promote interoperability standards that aim to facilitate the efficient dissemination of the content". The protocol is based on common standards like XML. HTTP and Dubline Core.

This article contains several characteristics of deep web and compare the surface web against the deep web.
Directed query technology is the only mean to integrate deep and surface Web information. I am interested in exploring the content of deep web pages, what is the current achievements? How to realized the goal? This is still a problem.

1, Digital libraries: challenges and influential work
Huge difference exists between providing access to discrete sets of digital collections and providing digital library services. To address this problem. information providers have to design enhanced gateway and navigation services on the interface and also introduce federation mechanisms to assist users to retrieval information through the distributed and heterogeneous information environment. However, the seamless federation access to information is still a big issues in digital library services.
The author introduce the OAI, however, OAI does not work in some environment. OAI is not a perfect one for harvesting information. In the future years, current standards have to be extended to offer more effective and efficient access to the distributed information environment.

Librarians, computer scientists, and the Digital Library Initiative
This paper focuses on the relationship between librarians and computer scientists. I do feel the same way with the author. Different occupations have different opinions on digital library, sometimes it is difficult to negotiate among these opinions.

The author described the current developments in institutional repositories and tried to explain why these are so deeply and strategically important to the enterprises of scholarship and higher education. Institutional repositories is a powerful idea.

This paper talks about the content management system that designed to manage the 30 web-based research at Georgia State University library.
The article is published in 2005, I am not sure that whether the libraries still use content management. And what is the meaning of utilizing content management in libraries?

1, How Internet Infrastructure work
The content is similar with what we have learned in the class.
URL, domain name, web servers, the topology of internet work.

2, According to the article, library vendors have two choices. They can continue to maintain large systems that use proprietary methods of interoperability and promise tight integration of services for their customers.
I think this approach is difficult to realize for some too old system, especially in developing countries.
My undergraduate university used to operate a small library system which is designed by China in 1970s. However, with the development of library holdings, catalog records and electronic database. The original library system is not applied to the current the conditions any more no matter how hard that the library vendor work on. The university library decided to change its library system.
However, changing a library system is so complicated, tremendous data have to transfer to another new library system, which is a pains-taking job. Besides, new models is strange for librarians and patrons. The effects of the new library system have to be evaluated carefully.
